JOPLIN — Joplin City Manager Mark Rohr wants the city to distribute weather radios to all Joplin homes that don't have one.
Rohr said a survey indicated 58 percent of Joplin homes don't have a weather radio, meaning the city would have to distribute about 11,000 radios at a cost of $300,440.
The Joplin Globe reported the state denied the city's application for money to fund the project. The American Red Cross donated $50,000, and Rohr said he will ask the Joplin Tornado First Response fund for $250,000 for the project.
He said the radios would provide some comfort for residents as the tornado-damaged city heads into a new storm season.
Rohr wants to start soon. The fire department will make a presentation to the city council Feb. 20.
