PrintEach week, the Missourian highlights a government record that is available to the public. Open records help people keep government in check and help them better understand how government affects their lives.

The records: Military records of Missouri residents who served between 1812 and World War I in both foreign and domestic wars.
Why you'd want them: Whether you're interested in finding an ancestor’s service record or just interested about the involvement of Missouri soldiers in past wars, this index lets you search for soldiers by name or unit.
Where you get the records: Go to Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan’s website at sos.mo.gov and click on the “Archives and Records” tab at the top.
Once on the page, search for “military records.” You can then click on “search the soldier’s records.” From there you can view information on soldiers for the Civil War, WWI and others.
How much it will cost: The information is free.
