COLUMBIA — A Hickman High School student was arrested Wednesday after a school resource officer discovered an unloaded gun in the boy's backpack.
Deaunadre Lewis-Gatewood, 17, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and receiving stolen property, according to a Columbia Police Department news release. He did not have any ammunition.
Michelle Baumstark, a spokeswoman for Columbia Public Schools, said Lewis-Gatewood will face disciplinary action. She said typically the punishment for bringing a gun to school is expulsion.
Another student saw Lewis-Gatewood showing the gun to someone else and reported the incident to school officials. The gun was reported stolen more than 30 years ago from out of state, the news release stated.
Baumstark said a note about the incident was sent to Hickman parents, faculty and staff.
