Proposed commemorative Mark Twain coin could aid Hannibal museum

HANNIBAL — Officials in Mark Twain's hometown are hoping Congress will approve a limited issue of silver and gold coins honoring the legendary author and humorist.

The Hannibal Courier-Post reported that a bill has been proposed in Congress that would call for the commemorative coin in 2016. If approved, the coin could be a big boost for tourism in Hannibal — the northeast Missouri town that was the inspiration for some of Twain's greatest work.

The U.S. Mint produces a limited quantity of silver and gold coins each year that are sold to collectors.

Proceeds from the Mark Twain coin would benefit four sites, including Hannibal's Mark Twain Museum. Executive director Cindy Lovell said the coin could generate an estimated $1 million for the museum.
