COLUMBIA — KMIZ/ABC went down Thursday afternoon after experiencing problems with the station's transmitters.
The station cut its signal to all providers in the televising area, except to Mediacom and CenturyLink, sometime between 1 and 2 p.m.
The engineers working identified the issue as a malfunction with the "exciter" in the transmitter, which is not a piece of equipment the station keeps readily on hand, said Gene Steinberg, general manager of KMIZ. The part is being shipped overnight, and they hope to fix the problem first thing in the morning.
"Mediacom and CenturyLink are fiber-linked, that's why they are still working. The regular transmitters are down though," said Regina Morris, assistant traffic director at KMIZ.
