Columbia residents celebrated Mardi Gras at Jazz, a Louisiana kitchen restaurant, at 217 N. Stadium Boulevard. Norm Jolly performed live music and restaurant staff passed out Mardi Gras beads.
Mardi Gras, french for "fat Tuesday," is a celebration on the last night before the beginning of the 40-day Lenten season, a period of fasting before Easter.
In New Orleans and many Roman Catholic countries, the Tuesday celebration is preceded by a week or more of parades and parties. Purple, green and gold are the traditional colors of the holiday.
