U.S. Supreme Court won't hear St. Louis sign law case

ST. LOUIS — It looks like St. Louisan Jim Roos will get to keep his anti-eminent domain mural.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to review a ruling by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that struck down part of the sign ordinance in St. Louis.

Roos put up the two-story mural after losing two dozen buildings through eminent domain. The appeals court ruled that it would be a violation of Roos' freedom of speech to require him to remove it.

City officials said the mural was 10 times larger than an ordinance allows.

An attorney for Roos said he is pleased by the ruling.

City Counselor Patti Hageman calls the Supreme Court decision disappointing and said there is a "clear split" in federal circuits concerning how municipalities may regulate signs.
