The Blue Note was established in 1980 by Richard King. Many prominent acts have performed at The Blue Note since it opened, including Johnny Cash, R.E.M. and Tech N9ne. In July 2010, Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube brought their “How the West was One” tour to Columbia to celebrate The Blue Note’s 30th anniversary.

Every summer, The Blue Note hosts an outdoor concert series called Ninth Street Summerfest. Once a month for five months, a portion of Ninth Street is shut down for different musical acts to perform.
