Brianna Lennon says she will run a second time for county office.

On Wednesday, Lennon announced her candidacy for Boone County clerk. She ran unsuccessfully for Boone County Southern District Commissioner in 2016 .

Lennon, 32, a Democrat, was recommended for the clerk’s position last year after Wendy Noren’s retirement, and formed a campaign committee in late June. But Taylor Burks, a Republican, was ultimately appointed by Gov. Eric Greitens.

Burks also plans to run for the office. If elected, he said he will continue maintaining bipartisan relations in government and election integrity.

On Thursday, Burks was appointed to the Missouri Association of County Clerks and Election Authorities Legislative Affairs Committee and Cybersecurity Task Force.

Former Boone County Clerk Wendy Noren resigned in June after 35 years in office because of health issues, according to previous Missourian reporting.

Lennon said her commitment to expanding access to the ballot and protecting elections motivated her to run for the clerk’s office this time.

“I am inspired by the incredible work I’ve seen firsthand being done by county clerks across the state to make voting easy and accessible for every eligible voter,” she said in a news release.

Lennon said she thinks the voter turnout in local elections is still low, a challenge she would take on if elected.

She said one of the ways to improve those conditions is to ask for feedback from election judges and carry on conversations between voters and public officials.

Lennon worked at the Missouri Secretary of State’s office for three years. She is also a former Missouri Assistant Attorney General and an MU School of Law graduate.

Her top priority in the coming months will be increasing community conversation and citizen participation.

“My focus right now is on talking as much to voters as possible,” she said.

Since Burks took office, Boone County has updated its website to allow residents to register to vote, change an address and request an absentee ballot online, according to previous Missourian reporting.
