The mother of a rape victim testified Thursday about the experience of watching her lively and outgoing daughter change into someone completely different after Austin Campbell entered her dorm room and raped her in 2016.
The mother of the victim was one of six people who made statements Thursday during Campbell’s sentencing. Found guilty in August in his second trial on the charge, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison by Boone County Circuit Judge Jeff Harris. The maximum possible sentence is life in prison.
Her daughter has been physically and emotionally affected, the victim’s mother said. Her daughter can’t sleep unless her bedroom door is locked and barricaded shut. And it has emotionally scarred the family and friends of the victim, particularly those who testified in Campbell’s re-trial, she said.
Because of Campbell’s “one selfish act,” she said, “our lives have been changed forever.”
Campbell, 21, an MU freshman at the time, was arrested and charged with rape and burglary after he entered the victim’s residence hall room on Jan. 18, 2016, and raped her. The burglary charge was later dropped.
His first trial ended in a hung jury in November 2017 after jurors could not come to a unanimous decision, according to previous Missourian reporting. A jury in August, made up of 11 men and one woman, found Campbell guilty of first-degree rape.
A former girlfriend of Campbell also gave a statement on Thursday, saying that Campbell forced himself on her sexually several times, including one incident in which he raped her.
In her final statement Thursday, Boone County Assistant Prosecutor Jessica Caldera said Campbell had raped two women and “that is way too many.”
Gale McIntyre, Campbell’s mother, said her son should receive the minimum sentence because “he has a lot of good to give.”
“I know he’s made a mistake, and we know he’s been found guilty,” she said. But she described her son as “a loving individual.”
Campbell is also subject to lifetime supervision and has to register as a sex offender.
