The first Gift 4 Gun Exchange collected 41 guns, more than the amount Cory Crosby, the organizer of the event, expected.

Gift 4 Gun Exchange is a gun buyback event that helps get guns off the street and bring awareness to gun violence in Columbia, according to its funding website. People who turned in their guns were able to receive $100 or gift cards worth the same amount with no questions asked.

"It was a successful first time," Crosby said. He said he hoped that more people, community leaders and companies could join the event and help bring change to the city together.

The Gift 4 Gun Exchange received $1,120 through its online fundraising site, less than the $4,100 needed but a last-minute private donation covered the shortfall.

Sean Spence, the co-organizer, said that they would like to hold the event again in the future if they could raise enough money from private sources.
