A new Daniel Boone Regional Library director has been appointed to replace Melissa Carr, the library director for 21 years.
Margaret Conroy, whose previous job titles include assistant director of the St. Charles City-County Library District and Missouri State librarian, is expected to take over on Jan. 18 after Carr retires.
Conroy was offered the position the day after her interview and said she is excited to return to mid-Missouri. She received a master’s degree in public administration from MU.
“I love the Columbia community, and I’ve known Melissa Carr for quite some time,” Conroy said. “She’s done great things at that library district and being able to follow in those footsteps of providing excellent service in the community is something I look forward to.”
The Daniel Boone Regional Library District budget in 2017 was more than $10.5 million. Conroy worked with an $18 million budget at the St. Charles library district.
The next few weeks for Conroy will be spent finishing her current job and looking for housing before settling into the position. While she doesn’t anticipate big changes from her prior work in the library field, Conroy said she looks forward to getting to know the staff and the issues facing libraries today in Fulton, Columbia and Ashland.
Conroy was one of three finalists for the job, which oversees a district that circulated 2.35 million items last year. That includes books, audiobooks, CDs and DVDs, kits, electronic devices, and more.
The Daniel Boone library district also had nearly 750,000 visits last year among its three branches, bookmobile and delivery services, The regional library system counted 111,800 cardholders in 2016.
Mary Fennel, the district’s board president, said there was a strong pool of candidates for the position of director.
“After inviting the three finalists to Columbia to meet staff to tour the area and for another interview with the Ad Hoc Director’s Selection Committee, we felt that Margaret was the best fit for our regional library system,” she said in a statement.
