When Skylark Bookshop opened Saturday, it launched a “reading spa” in which readers can have books selected especially for them.

Owner Alex George got the idea for The Skylark Reading Spa from a bookstore owner he met this year at an American Booksellers Association conference in Memphis.

The man owned a bookstore with a similar program in George’s hometown of Bath, England. George once bought a certificate from the store for his father before he met the owner.

With the purchase of a $100 certificate, customers may have a list of books individually curated for them. A staff member will talk with the customer one-on-one to figure out the type of books they like before selecting a range of options.

“We’ve had a lot of interest already,” George said.

He expects the program will gain traction as a holiday gift idea and that they will have a lot of people coming in to use their certificates after the first of the year.

Six days in, manager Carrie Koepke said the store at 20 S. Ninth St. has been receiving a lot of community support.

“It’s just been fun and exciting and happiness and books,” Koepke said.
