COLUMBIA — Columbia Fire Department water technicians were searching Saturday afternoon for a person who jumped into the water at Swan Lake in southern Columbia.

Emergency units responded at 3:53 p.m. to a water rescue at Las Margaritas restaurant on 10 Southampton Drive. Columbia Fire Department Public Information Officer Brad Fraizer said an unidentified person jumped into Swan Lake from the deck of Las Margaritas and attempted to swim to a floating fountain in the middle of the water.

About halfway to the fountain, the person went under the water, Fraizer said.

Bystanders were in the water looking for the person when emergency units arrived. The bystanders were cleared from the water before the search began.

Police blocked off the sidewalk on the western side of the property and Las Margaritas had closed off its deck while the search was underway.

Fraizer said the water's depth varies between 6 and 12 feet in places, which makes it difficult to confirm whether or not the person is still in the water.

Fraizer could not confirm whether alcohol played a part in the incident.
