All state offices and MU will be closed Friday in observance of Juneteenth, according to emails Thursday. 

Boone County government offices will also close Friday, according to an email sent shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday from the County Commission. 

Columbia College is also closed Friday. The college decided last September to make it a paid holiday. Stephens College announced recently it will make Juneteenth a paid holiday next year.

President Joe Biden signed a bill Thursday establishing June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day. 

Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of enslaved people throughout the United States. 

It is the first federal holiday established since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983.
