CALLAWAY COUNTY — Two central Missouri men died in a car accident early Wednesday morning in Callaway County.

Christopher M. Edwards, 40, of Fulton was driving west in the eastbound lane of U.S. 54 when he hit the other vehicle around Route AA, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report.

Christopher B. Steelman, 32, of New Bloomfield was in the car Edwards hit.

After the initial impact, Steelman’s car overturned and hit the median. Edwards’ car rotated, traveled into with the median and then caught fire.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Around midnight, Missouri State Highway Patrol received multiple calls reporting a car driving in the wrong direction coming from Fulton just before the accident, White said. Several officers were dispatched, but they were unable to stop the car before the collision.

The accident occurred at approximately 12:22 a.m. Sgt. Scott White of Missouri State Highway Patrol said traffic was backed up on U.S. 54 until about 5 a.m.

Whether alcohol or drugs were involved has not yet been determined. The Major Crash Investigation Unit is reconstructing the accident to find the cause of the crash, White said.

Neither driver was wearing a seatbelt.
