Bernard L. Nittler, 95, was born Dec. 24, 1925, in Shickley, Nebraska, to Frank and Rose Nittler. He died Aug. 12, 2020, at his home in Boone County, north of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Lila Morisse, as well as his daughter Barbara Morefield and his grandson Aaron Morefield.

He is survived by four siblings, Jerry Nittler and LeAnne Finnegan, both of Denver, Colorado, Dorothy Newman of Columbus, Nebraska, and Barbara Sheridan of Sutton, Nebraska.

Bernard is also survived by his children Kathleen Nittler of Boone County, Tom and Betty Nittler of Villa Ridge, Mary and Dan Shelburne of St. Charles, John Nittler and Patricia Caffrey of Williston, Vermont, Rosanne Leabig of Hazelwood, Robert and Michelle Nittler of Hallsville and Tim Nittler and Bobbie Blome of O’Fallon, Illinois, as well as 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Bernard was a veteran of World War II and a graduate of the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. He had a long career as an auditor in Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri.

When he retired he was working as a branch manager for the Defense Contract Audit Agency in the St. Louis area. He and his beloved wife moved to mid-Missouri in 1982 where they spent many years enjoying country life. He loved family activities, traveling, gardening and sitting on the front porch with his wife admiring nature.

Friends will be received from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2020, at St. Thomas More Newman Center in Columbia, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Dan Merz officiating. Interment with full military honors will be held at New Liberty Cemetery in Ashland. Expressions of sympathy may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
