Judith Mathis Richards, 80, of Columbia died peacefully Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2020, in her daughter’s home.

She was born Judith Ann Mathis in 1940 in St. Louis to Roy Sublett “Pete” Mathis and Pauline Voorhies Mathis, both of whom preceded her in death.

She graduated in 1958 from Hickman High School, and in 1960 she married her high school sweetheart, Lon Davis Richards (Captain USAF) who preceded her in death in 1968 in Vietnam. She never remarried, saying he was the love of her life.

She was also preceded in death by her sister, Jane Pemberton.

She is survived by her daughters, Kirsten Richards and Regan Richards, as well as many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.

She earned an MA in art from MU in 1971, and art remained a cornerstone throughout her life.

Judy was a lifelong Girl Scout and was active in the American Red Cross, Columbia Friends Meeting, Locust Grove Baptist Cemetery Association and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

A virtual memorial meeting will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 2020, under the care of Columbia Friends Meeting. For more information, email: info@quakersmissouri.org
