Matthew G. Smith, 42, of Columbia passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at the Rainbow Hospice Ark wing of Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 22, 2019, at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martins. A Memorial Mass will be at noon with the Rev. Stephen Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Matt was born Nov. 28, 1976, in Jefferson City, the son of Marvin Smith and Lorraine DeBroeck Smith. Matt graduated in 1995 from St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary High School in Hannibal. He earned his undergraduate degree from Conception Seminary College in 1999.
Matt was a proud member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 513 and was everyone’s “Go-To Guy” for home improvement projects. He was a jack-of-all-trades, skilled at all things technical and an extremely hard worker.
Matt was an accomplished singer at various churches. He possessed a great sense of humor that was appreciated by all. He enjoyed cooking and grilling for both family and friends. Matt was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a very trusted and loyal friend, mentor and big brother to many.
In addition to his parents, Matt is survived by his husband, Ray Holland of Columbia; siblings, Angel Smith Embry (Dale) of California, Missouri, Steven Smith (Emilio Favale) of Brooksville, Florida, and Gregory Shields (Kristi) of Russellville; one uncle, Mark DeBroeck; 11 nieces and nephews, Amber Falter, Brian Shields (Catlin), Austin Falter, Tyler Embry (Samantha Russell), Brandon Embry, Katelyn Shields (Seth Raithel), Emma Kremer, Hanna Kremer, Lucia Embry, Ava Kremer and Tanner Embry; and one great-niece, Addison Marshall.
Matt was preceded in death by his grandparents; a sister, Becky Shields Kremer; and a husband, Eric Seeley.
