A hearing in Attorney General Josh Hawley’s lawsuit to strip away protections for people with pre-existing conditions took place Sept. 5. Yet, just 20 days later, his campaign went on the air with an ad in which he professes to support the protections his lawsuit would eliminate.

Every day, I fear a ruling that will strip protections for myself and nearly 2.5 million Missourians.

The GOP has said numerous times that we need to do more for those who suffer from mental illness. Yet, Attorney General Josh Hawley’s Affordable Care Act lawsuit will do the exact opposite, should it be successful.

Currently, insurance companies can’t refuse to cover mental health disorders because of the cost. But elected officials in Missouri want to undercut these protections. They’ve slashed Medicaid and gutted the Affordable Care Act without providing any alternatives.

We live in the most wealthy country in the world, yet our government makes us fight for our most basic rights. Overturning access to affordable health care shouldn’t even be an option to our courts or politicians.

Missourians deserve representatives who will protect our health over petty politics, not ones like Josh Hawley who says whatever his megadonors want to hear.
