Remember those shady commercials that ran when Eric Greitens was governor about how horrible it is for nonprofits to provide donor information to the state? It wasn’t clear exactly what they were really after. But it seems Republicans got what they wanted with the passage of the Personal Privacy Protection Act.
What they wanted was to protect the identities of political donors to nonprofits that act as political operatives. These kinds of “privacy” protections are only protecting powerful people from being responsible for their conduct.
The current controversy in Mississippi with Brett Favre sheds light on the dangers of keeping this kind of information secret.
In Missouri, this law has the added benefit for these politicians that they can hide evidence of their cronies seeking Missouri contracts.
Republican politicians are in total control of our state government, and they just keep passing self-serving legislation that takes away government transparency.
