Former Missouri pitcher and current MLB All-Star Max Scherzer will have his No. 31 retired by Missouri baseball at the upcoming First Pitch Dinner on Jan. 18 in Columbia.

As a Tiger, Scherzer dominated at the NCAA level from 2004-06. The right-hander broke out during his sophomore year in 2005, leading the Big 12 with a 1.86 ERA and 131 strikeouts. During that campaign, he also nabbed Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and earned Second-Team All-America honors.

Scherzer was drafted 11th overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2006 MLB Draft, and has played for the Detroit Tigers and Washington Nationals during his 11-year MLB tenure. The Missouri product is a three-time Cy Young Award winner and has been named an All-Star the last six seasons.

Scherzer will be just the fourth Tiger to have his jersey retired by the baseball program, following No. 34 John Simmons, No. 33 Gene McArtor and No. 15 Phil Bradley.

Tigers' Misner named preseason All-American

The accolades for Missouri's baseball team during the week doesn't stop with Scherzer. Junior outfielder and first baseman Kameron Misner was named to the Preseason All-American Second Team on Tuesday by Perfect Game/Rawling's.

Misner was one of 51 players in the country given the honor.

Although he missed the final 22 games of the 2018 season, Misner put together a standout sophomore season at the plate. He led the Tigers with a .360 batting average, .497 on-base percentage and .576 slugging percentage. Misner also stole 12 bases, hit three triples and a team-high nine doubles.

His Missouri career has started hot thus far with a career .311 batting average, 75 runs, 21 doubles, four triples, 11 home runs, 59 RBI, 30 stolen bases and a .908 OPS.
