Sophie Cunningham poses for a photo

Missouri’s Sophie Cunningham, right, poses for a photo with WNBA COO Christy Hedgpeth after being selected by the Phoenix Mercury in the second round WNBA draft in New York on April 10.

Former Missouri standout Sophie Cunningham is hopeful that she will make the Phoenix Mercury’s roster, she told Jeff Metcalfe of the Arizona Republic and azcentral.com. Final WNBA roster cuts down to 12 players must be done Thursday.

“I would just feel so humbled and blessed (to make the roster),” Cunningham told Metcalfe. “I think a lot of people who grow up in Columbia, Missouri, don’t get the opportunity that I get.”

“I’m just not representing myself, I’m representing my whole state and my family.”

In Phoenix’s preseason win over the Los Angeles Sparks on May 11, Cunningham scored 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including 2-of-4 shooting from 3-point range. Four days later, in the Mercury’s final preseason game, Cunningham posted nine points and hit the game-winning 3-pointer.

The WNBA season begins Friday. Phoenix opens its season Saturday at Seattle.
