Nearly 100 protesters marched around the state capitol building in downtown Jefferson City on Thursday, August 13th for the People’s State of the State: State of Emergency protest. The demonstration was organized by the group Expect Us based out of St. Louis, where many of the demonstrators traveled from. Protesters marched through downtown in response to a special session called by Governor Mike Parson to enact new tough on crime legislation, including allowing children as young as 14 years old to be charged as adults. Protesters staged a die-in near the Governor’s Mansion where eight people were arrested on July 30, 2020 protesting the same legislation, police threatened demonstrators with arrest for blocking the street, but no arrests were made.
