A display of support for MU graduate and gunshot survivor Jasmine-Kay Johnson took place Saturday at her home in Alton, Illinois. Over 50 friends, family and past teachers participated in a parade for the graduate after her several months-long stay in the hospital. On April 8, 2020, Johnson was hit by a stray bullet while studying at her home in Alton resulting in the loss of function of the left side of her body and some of her vision. However, Johnson dedicates a large part of her recovery to the support from her family and friends. “This was such a big deal,” Johnson said. “I can’t thank everyone who came out enough.” Johnson managed to finish her degree on time with all her credits and with honors distinction. While she is currently focused on her recovery, Johnson dreams of working for Rolling Stone in New York one day.
